The Council of Monsters- Water Edition

Kursbeskrivning - The circle in this edition looks into mythologies and creatures related to water bodies. It uses mythologies as a lens to look into socio-cultural and historical realities of different cultures in different times.

Kursplan -

Sammankomst 1- “The secret world guardians”- World serpents and creation mythologies across the globe

Sammankomst 2 - “Who’s that in my pool?” A look into creatures lurking around the neighbourhood– Näcken, Bäckahästen, and Kelpies

Sammankomst 3 -“Discovering distant royal cousins!” The Nagas in India and the Dragons in China

Sammankomst 4 -“The kraken has a twin!” The tentacled siblings of the sea Kraken and Akkorokamui

Sammankomst 5 - “She’s perfect! Even has the fins to show for it.” A socio-historical look into the depiction of women at sea pt 1

Sammankomst 6 - “Fin or feet? Does it matter- She’s a goddess!” A socio historical look into the depiction of women at sea pt 2

Sammankomst 7 -“My spouse is a frog!” A deeper look into Disney’s Princess and the Frog, and other frog themed mythological weddings

Sammankomst 8 - Conclusion session: Let the council meet!

Mål

The course has two aims- first to familiarise participants with how different socio-cultural realities affect folklore and mythology and how these turn formulate social perceptions. The second aim is to help participants develop their conversational English skills. Overall, there is a mixed aim of having participants understand nuances of mythology and folklore and improving cultural communication in English.

Ledare - Brinda Sarma. Brinda is currently pursuing her master’s in Digital Humanities in Uppsala University. Prior to this, she was a teacher of English and had previously done a Master’s in English literature. Her special interest lies in folklore and mythology and doing comparative analysis of similar creatures or tropes from stories across the globe.
